Here in Arizona, Flagstaff especially the sun is more intense than most states. Ultraviolet light from the sun can be very damaging to eyes and skin. As you move closer to the equator and higher in altitude, the amount of UV exposure increases. According to the National Weather Service, for every 1000 feet of elevation gained there is a 4% to 5% increase in the severity of UV radiation exposure, this is because of a thinner and cleaner atmosphere. Flagstaff is 5000-6000 feet higher in altitude than Phoenix, that's 20%-30% more exposure to UV radiation. Sand, water and snow also increase damage caused by UV light, snow can increase UV radiation by 4 times. UV radiation can cause a great deal of damage including skin cancer, cataracts, pingueculae, pterygia and macular degeneration.  Having proper protection is important to the prevention of damage to your eyes. Sunglasses that block 100% of both UV and UVB are highly recommended. They should fit properly, larger sunglasses that wrap around the eyes provide the most protection. Wearing a hat with a brim especially on those sunny days offers greater protection.  Brown tints are favored over grey for people who are at risk for macular degeneration because brown blocks more blue light, blue light may be as harmful or even more damaging to people with macular degeneration.
Come give our opticians and optical department a visit and allow our us to help fit you with a pair of sunglasses and glasses to better conserve your eye health.
